Remembering Katrina: Vigil marks anniversary in New Orleans; Packard preaches

[ENS, NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana] St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Lakeview, New Orleans, served as the site for an August 28 diocesan-wide 7 p.m. Eucharist and vigil of the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Located not far from the now infamous 17th Street Canal, St. Paul's has made a remarkable comeback in its first year of rehabilitation following the ravages of the storm and flooding.

Five bishops, clergy from all over the diocese, St. Paul's choir and servers processed into the nave as daylight gave way to evening. Louisiana's Canon Chad Jones led the chanting of the Great Litany in procession.

Remembering Katrina: Mississippi coast clergy, members, mark anniversary with action

[Episcopal News Service]

Action was the operative word along the Mississippi Gulf Coast this week as Episcopalians observed the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina by continuing their commitment to rebuilding.

August 28 was a typical south Mississippi day. It was hot and humid -- not the perfect day to be working in the sun. Yet, that is exactly what the Rev. Elizabeth Wheatley, rector of the destroyed Christ Episcopal Church in Bay St. Louis, did.

Dear Friends,

For the past forty years we have been largely alone on this desert fighting a predator that not only has robbed us of all but a small piece of our historic homeland, but threatens the traditions and holy sites of Christianity. We are tired, weary, sick, and wounded. We need your help.

LAMBETH PALACE: Archbishop condemns Middle East violence

[Source: Lambeth Palace] The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, has condemned the escalating violence in the Middle East.

Writing to the Heads of Churches in the Lebanon, Williams said, "I have been alarmed at the spiral of violence, the vicious circle of attack and retaliation, that has developed over the last few days. My prayers and sympathy are with the principal victims, the innocent civilians on both sides of the border, who now live in terror and are powerless to prevent the collective suffering at the hands of at the hands of Hizballah and the Israeli military.

"The distress felt at the destruction not only of life but also the infrastructure so painstakingly rebuilt after years of conflict will, I know, be acute and reinforce the sense of helplessness at being caught up in a wider regional struggle. My condemnation of this resort to violence is unequivocal."
